EVE-Online Overview Settings

Tired of accidentally clicking on stargate guns when you are traveling 20 jumps? Sick of seeing asteroids when you only want to empty cans during mining ops? This is the information you need.

EVE allows for customization of the overview settings, the items listed in the upper-right corner of your display. Not only can you customize it, you can create presets to quickly switch between traveling, mining, missioning and salvaging.

Let’s start with finding the settings window. EVE is not known for its documentation, so this is not trivial.

Overview Settings

See that white, solid triangle just left of the word OVERVIEW? Clicking that brings up the overview settings window. You’ll find some defaults, a save menu item, and an open settings menu item. Context menus allow for adding and removing items from the overview list. Combined with the save feature, you can create your own presets. But the real fun is in overview settings window.

This is the heart of the settings window. This is where you will make changes for each different preset you create. The other sections will most likely remain static. Some examples here:

  • Mining - uncheck everything but asteroids and maybe the belt beacons
  • Ore Hauling - uncheck ‘roids; check containers, gates and stations
  • Traveling (High sec) - uncheck everything but gates and stations
  • Missions - uncheck wrecks
  • Salvaging / Looting - check wrecks but also keep NPCs checked in case of spawns

Mostly, I use this to get rid of the clutter that is NPC cops and station/gate guns. Oh yeah, billboards are annoying too. Does anyone like to see these in their overview? Only matters in low-sec.

State filters are also important, but more so for PvP. In PvP, you can uncheck your gang, corp and alliance so that only enemy ships show up in your overview list. This really helps in avoiding friendly-fire incidents. You might want to uncheck gang members in your mining presets to keep your list a bit cleaner. Oh! The wreck state filters are great for you new guys. You probably do not have the Salvaging skill, so you don’t care about empty wrecks once you’ve looted them. Play with this a little to see how it works.

So, now on to answer the perennial question, what does that colored icon mean? Answer: what you want it to. I’d stick with the defaults, here. Just use this page to learn what they mean. Order is important, by the way. If you have a corp mate in your gang, he will be purple with the default settings. If you move your corp icon up, he will show the green badge. Heck, since you are in Empire, feel free to drop the standings, if you get confused easily. Just make sure you have gang, corp and ‘at war’ going.

Okay, here’s where we could do a bit of work. Do you care if someone shoot people in low-sec if you don’t go there? The only two that should be checked are pilots at war with you and those that are at -5 standing. Those two are valid targets in high-sec. They should both have flashing red backgrounds. So when you see that, you should shoot or run! Concord will not attack you if you attack these targets. For the real carebears, you might even want to turn off the -5 standing one, so you know to always RUN when you see flashing red. And move that ‘at war’ to the top of the list!!

This is sort of import for PvP.  You want to see alliance (ally) and corp tickers.  Tag might be good for coordinating mining ops, but that’s not common.  Type might be useful, not sure.

This is interesting.  I have played with this a bit.  If you display ally and corp columns, you don’t need to show the same info here.  And you might not care even if you don’t have those extra columns.  I like to just show pilot name, ship type then ship name.  There are some funny ones.

This is new to me.  I have not used it.  Not sure if they are talking about gang broadcasts (warp to me, I need shield, etc.) or NPC agents.  There are very few agents in space, but the do exist.

 Anyways….

So this is an intro to overview settings.  Other than the first section, you’ll probably set the other items once and forget them.  It’s that first area where you will make a lot of different preset.  So set things up.  Then go back to the context menu and save the overview settings.  There is no ‘edit’, but you can overwrite names to achieve the same effect.

One last note.  These presets are especially important for group combat.  How?  Well, you might be assigned to take out frigates in a mission, so the battleships do not get locked down.  A preset showing just small craft would really help.  Or you might be that battleship pilot that should concentrate fire on the battlecruisers and larger ships.  In PvP, you might get an order to take our interdictors or all T2 interceptors.  You see where I’m going with this?
